To help prevent sexual violence, all members of the UC community — students, staff, faculty and other academic appointees — are required to receive sexual violence prevention and intervention training and education regularly.
UC’s systemwide curriculum, tailored to each audience, educates our community about sexual violence, how to prevent it, the role of intervention and what local resources are available.
Key concepts covered in UC’s systemwide curriculum for every audience are:
- Definitions of different forms of sexual violence
- Social norms, including the attitudes and beliefs that can normalize violence
- Bystander intervention
- Responding to sexual violence using methods that acknowledge the impact of violence and trauma on survivors’ lives
- Local resources, including confidential support for survivors of sexual violence and appropriate services for those accused of sexual violence
- Rights and options about reporting sexual violence
Students: Starting fall 2015, all incoming students are required to take the education and training program at their campus within the first six weeks of class. All continuing students are required to take ongoing education and training annually.

Education and Training for UCDC affiliates:
To help prevent sexual violence, all members of the UCDC community are required to receive sexual violence prevention and intervention training and education regularly.
UCDC has access to following training courses specifically designed to prevent sexual harassment and sexual violence. These courses are available through the University of California, Office of the President Learning Center.
Training on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)
This interactive training course is available to all UCOP employees through the UC Learning Center. This 30-minute narrated online course promotes the awareness and prevention of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and consent to UC incoming students and new employees, including faculty, academics and staff. The course also provides options for safe bystander intervention, information on reporting an offense and other resources.
Sexual Harassment /Sexual Violence Prevention Training for Supervisors
All employees who supervise others are required to complete sexual harassment prevention training every two years. In addition to staff supervisors, most academic employees (including all faculty) have been identified as having supervisory authority for the purposes of this law, and are required to receive the training. New supervisors must complete this training within six months of assuming supervisory responsibilities. This is mandated by State Assembly Bill 1825, which went into effect in 2005. Supervisors may meet this requirement by completing an online course through the UC Learning Center.
Sexual Harassment /Sexual Violence Prevention Training for Non-Supervisors
Starting January 31, 2016, non-supervisory staff will be required to take sexual harassment prevention training that must be completed by April 8, 2016. New hires will be required to complete the course within six weeks of employment. This 50-minute course is delivered online through the UC Learning Center.
